Do you think you have a leak? There are several tell tale signs that your home or offices plumbing may be leaking. Cracks in the building near especially near fittings such as taps, sinks, pipes or drains. Has your building subsided for no obvious reason? Damp spots or water stains or ceilings, walls or floor coverings.

There are a couple of ways to detect leak or pipe damage. One of which is a camera inspection. This involves lowering a camera into you drain and a video streaming back to a screen which is viewed by a plumber who can see any obvious pipe damage.

This technology is effective however if a small leaks and fractures can be quite easily missed. In this scenario a hydrostatic test may be an alternative solution.

Hydrostatic testing involves an inflatable balloon with a camera on the from is fed through the pipe. The balloon is then inflated to create a water tight seal. The camera ensures a quality seal has been made by providing the plumber with a video showing if any water leaks past the balloon. Water is then pumped into the pipe behind the balloon and a series of tests are implemented to see if the pipe leaks.

As you can see in the diagram below. An inflatable balloon is inserted into the pipe and inflated creating a sealed section of the pipe. A camera is used to ensure that the seal is true and no water is leaking through. Then this section of the pipe is filled with water to see if there are any leaks. Through this process a leak can be pin pointed quite accurately.
